How it works
Every year since 2009, the federal government sets a TFSA contribution limit: $7,000 in 2026. Your room builds from the year you turn 18, whether you have an account or not, and unused room adds up from year to year with no limit.
A withdrawal doesn’t cost you room: the amount is added back to your room on January 1 of the following year. Putting it back in the same year without enough room, however, creates an excess.
Newcomers build room from the year they become residents of Canada, for the full year. Years spent abroad as a non-resident don’t give any room.
An excess is taxed at 1% a month, on the highest amount in each month, for as long as it stays in the account. Growth and losses don’t change your room: an investment that doubled doesn’t create an excess.
The shows your room as of January 1 in My Account. This calculation helps you estimate it during the year, or understand where the number comes from.
