Workplace pensions and the employer match
Workplace pension plan and employer match
Retirement savings offered through your job, where your employer often contributes alongside you. Their contribution is part of your pay.
The 2026 numbers
- 18%
- RRSP room: share of income, minus the pension adjustment
- $33,810
- 2026 RRSP limit, shared with the plan
Numbers checked against the official sources on September 28, 2026.
What it’s for
- Getting money you wouldn’t otherwise get: your employer’s contribution.
- Saving automatically, straight from your pay.
Who it’s for
- Employees whose employer offers a plan: defined benefit, defined contribution, group or other.
How it works
Defined benefit (DB): the pension is promised in advance, based on your years and your salary. Defined contribution (DC) and group RRSP: what you get depends on what went in and how it grew.
Employer match: your employer puts in, say, 50 cents for every dollar you contribute, up to a percentage of your salary. If you don’t contribute, they don’t either.
Your contributions are usually deducted from your income, just like an RRSP.
The plan reduces your RRSP : the pension adjustment is subtracted from the 18% of your income.
An example
A salary of $60,000 in Québec
Your employer matches 50% of what you put in, up to 4% of your salary.
- You contribute 4% of your salary
- $2,400
- Your employer adds 50%
- $1,200
- Total in your account
- $3,600
- Less tax on your contribution
- $786
- What your contribution really costs you
- $1,614
Before any , every dollar you put in gets 50% more.
Fictional example, round numbers.
Common mistakes
- Not signing up, or contributing less than the maximum your employer matches: that’s part of your pay you never receive.
- Leaving before the vesting period ends without knowing it: your employer’s contributions may not be yours yet.
- Contributing to a personal RRSP without accounting for the pension adjustment.
